Paljassaare Kalatööstus is the first in Estonia to be issued the MSC certificate for an environmentally sustainable fisheries enterprise

AS Paljassaare Kalatööstus was the first fisheries industry in Estonia to be issued the international MSC certificate. The MSC certificate and the MSC label on products prove that the company is environmentally responsible and that the production cycle of the enterprise is strictly legal and environmentally sustainable from catching of the fish until the ready-made product reaches the consumers.

Saltwater fish are an important food resource for billions of individuals. On the second half of the 20th century the consumption of ocean fish by humans increased by five times. During the past few decades the overfishing on oceans has become a grave global problem.

The objective of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) that was established in 1997 is to help ensuring the sustainability of global fish stocks and the health of the oceans' ecosystems. One of the signs of this practice is a stricter voluntary monitoring of fisheries companies, the outlet of which is to grant the MSC label to the products of the enterprises.

"In Australia as well as in America, lately also increasingly in Europe and particularly in the Scandinavian countries the fish products with the MSC label are fast gaining popularity among consumers, despite the slightly higher price level of such products," stated the CEO of AS Paljassaare Kalatööstus Mauno Leppik. "Our first product with the MSC label will also be specifically targeted to the Scandinavian market," Leppik added.

"Our benefits from the well-established "quality label" are obvious – the MSC label will certainly further increase the confidence of the consumers towards our enterprise and our products as this label proves that we manufacture our products while sustaining the nature and looking into the future. We are the first in Estonia and also one of the first ones in the Baltic States the products of which will carry this label,“ said Mauno Leppik.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) firmly believes that the right to catch fish means to do it in a responsible and sustainable fashion. The choices made by a well-informed consumer will help save and conserve the fish resources as well as the natural habitats of the fish. The well-informed markets also help the enterprises that aim to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner to be competitive on the market.

"Joining the MSC certification system will further help us to improve the monitoring system of our raw materials and the processed products from the moment the fish is caught to when the ready-made product reaches the end consumer," noted the quality control specialist of AS Paljassaare Kalatööstus Tiina Reiman.

MSC has elaborated certification standards for sustainable and well-managed fisheries operation. The Marine Stewardship Council assesses and recognises environmentally conscious and ecologically responsible fisheries enterprises with its blue logotype. The label can be used on their products only by the enterprises that use the channels of acquiring raw materials which are completely honest and transparent and the production conditions of which have been carefully monitored.

In 1997 the World Wildlife Federation and the corporation that is the largest buyer of seafood in the world - Unilever - founded a global non-profit organisation MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) in order to find solutions for problems related to overfishing. From the year 1999 MSC started to operate independently, completely separately from either founding organisations. In 2000 the first MSC certificate in the world was issued in Australia.

AS Paljassaare Kalatööstus produces breaded fish products, fish-based ready-to-eat meals and pizzas as well as pancakes. Export sales to 42 countries forms 85 per cent of the company's production volume.

Turnover of Estonian subsidiaries of the Vichiunai Group amounted to 439 million Kroons in 2006.

There are currently 383 persons working in Estonian enterprises of the Vichiunai Group.
